2.01 Why are we experiencing so many wildfires?
INITIAL IDEAS
1. Try to explain a recent change in precipitation across the United States, with the American West experiencing more droughts (and fires), and the East experiencing more floods.
2. Complete a self-evaluation of your initial ideas.
PART 1 DEVELOPING IDEAS
1. Share what comes up for you as you learn about Earth's water and any questions you have as you explore where Earth's water may have come from, Earth's water cycle, and why water is important for life on Earth and maybe elsewhere.
2. Share any patterns you notice as you learn about several recent droughts and floods and examine news headlines associated with these events.
3. On a whiteboard, model how water can move into and out of various locations on our planet. Then, try to explain how both droughts and floods could be associated with global changes in temperature.
4. We know evaporation can affect how water moves on Earth. Try to design an experiment that can help us explain the relationship between temperature and evaporation. Try to make sense of data you collect from an adapted version of our experiment.
5. Share what you think is happening as you watch atmospheric water move across the United States and learn about the coreolis effect and rainshadow effect.
6.Share what you discover as you examine datasets on the effects of increasing temperatures across water sources.
7. Evaluate your contributions in Part 1 Developing Ideas 2.01.
